Urea fertilizer crisis in Punjab, fear of affecting wheat yield
Dealers and stockists are selling the fertilizer in black by justifying artificial scarcity and the administration is making nothing but lip service: Kisan/File PhotoDue to the crisis of urea fertilizer across Punjab, a bag of fertilizer worth Rs 3,750 is being sold for Rs 5,200.
It appears that the government's assertion that by raising wheat production this year, they will be able to export excess wheat in addition to becoming self-sufficient has been refuted.
Till December 15, the fertilizer that is given to wheat first along with water is not available, which has the farmers worried and they fear that the yield per acre will be very low.
Farmers say that the dealers and stockists are selling the fertilizer in black by justifying artificial scarcity, inflation has taken a backseat and has gone from Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,200 in a year.
The farmers added that the management is doing nothing but lip service, if this continues, it will not be possible to fertilize the wheat crop a second time, which will adversely affect the yield.
On the other hand, Caretaker Industry and Commerce Minister Gauhar Ejaz has taken strict notice of the artificial shortage of urea fertilizer and has directed the fertilizer factories not to let the production and supply decrease.
Gohar Ejaz says that the government has also placed orders for imported fertilizers in view of the shortage, from December 20, fertilizer ships will start arriving at the port on a daily basis.
