Will the license of K Electric be renewed or not? NEPRA completed the hearing

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has completed the hearing on K Electric's license renewal application.


Chairman Nepra Waseem Mukhtar presided over a hearing for renewal of K Electric's distribution license in which Nepra officials said that K Electric's 20-year license has expired, K Electric has been granted an interim distribution license of 6 months. The interim license granted will also expire in January.


Nepra officials said that while proposals were sought from stakeholders on K-electric license renewal, most of the proposals came against the renewal of electric distribution licences.



During the hearing, the electric authorities claimed that they have invested Rs 474 billion in 20 years after privatization, this money was invested in power distribution and transmission and other sectors.



During the hearing, Imran Shahid, leader of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi, said that the authority should not support K Electric, K Electric does the worst load shedding, K Electric has no gas contract with Sui Southern, K Electric gets electricity from the federal government. There is also no agreement, Nepra should stop awarding KElectric any more.


Nepra has completed the hearing on the application for renewal of electricity license, the decision of which will be issued later.


It should be noted that the 20-year term of K Electric's license expired in July 2023, Nepra has given an interim extension of 6 months to K Electric's license.
