FBR's decision to cut off electricity and gas connections of non-filers of tax returns

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) announced that it would take action against the non-filers and that individuals who do not submit tax returns will have their gas and electricity connections turned off as well as have their mobile phone sims disabled after getting notice.


According to FBR, in the first phase, notices will be issued to unregistered persons, upon receipt of notices, mobile phones of those who do not file tax returns will be SIM blocked and electricity and gas connections will be cut.


The Federal Board of Rio Nuevo has planned to bring 15 to 2 million new taxpayers in the tax net by June next year and NADRA has also assured support.


As per the FBR's announcement, 145 District Tax Offices, led by grade 17 officers, have been set up nationwide with the aim of expanding the tax base by bringing in between 1.5 million and 2 million additional taxpayers by June 2024.


Through the acquisition and utilization of third-party data on prospective taxpayers, this program will raise the tax-to-GDP ratio to the targeted level.


According to FBR, action will be taken against non-filers on the basis of this data, various institutions and departments will be obliged to provide data through automatic transmission system.


The FBR statement said that Chairman NADRA has assured to provide support to FBR through data integration.
