Seeking information from Tik Tok and Meta about disinformation on the Gaza war
EU authorities will launch a formal investigation if not satisfied
Meta And TiktokThe European Union has called on short video sharing platforms TikTok and Meta to provide information on the possible spread of disinformation on their platforms related to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The two firms have a week to respond, according to foreign media reports, and under their new technical rules, EU officials can launch a formal investigation if they are not satisfied with their answers.
The EU is concerned about the potential spread of terrorism and violent content and hate speech during the conflict.
"We will publish our first report next week, which will include information about our ongoing work to keep the European community safe," a representative for TikTok stated.
"Our teams are working 24 hours a day to keep our platforms safe, and we're cracking down on content that violates our policies or local law," a Meta spokesperson said.
Therefore, we will be happy to provide further details in this regard.
The EU's request to TikTok and Meta comes a week after it contacted social media platform X to provide information on the matter.
However, X officials responded by saying they had removed hundreds of Hamas-affiliated accounts from the platform.
