Norway: Family finds ancient treasure in search of lost gold earring

The artefacts were used in a 9th-century burial of a woman on the small island of Jomfroland: experts

In Norway, a family searching for a missing gold earring discovers an ancient treasure.

The Asok family, who were buried beneath a tree, reportedly found this treasure after hearing about it in foreign media.

The family was reportedly gathered in their garden when a woman's gold earring went somewhere. The family reportedly used a metal detector to recover the earring.

It is said that although they did not find the gold earring, they did find an ancient treasure under the tree that contained relics that were more than 1000 years old.

The family alerted the authorities, and Telemark County Council and Westfold Heritage praised the family for discovering the priceless artifacts.

Experts believe that the artefacts were used in the burial of a woman on the small island of Jomfroland in the 9th century, while one expert has dated the artefacts to between 780 and 850 century.

The main relic discovered in the burial, according to experts who spoke with Live Science, is an oval-shaped brooch that a lady would have worn to secure a shoulder strap to the front. Such brooches are frequently discovered in Viking women's graves.
