European Union's Sakharov Prize announcement to Mahsa Amini

The European Union has announced to give the Sakharov Prize 2023, the highest human rights award, to Mehsa Amini from Iran.


Mehsa Amini was arrested in Iran for improperly wearing a hijab, where she died in custody. Mehsa Amini's death sparked violent protests in Iran. September 16 marked the one-year anniversary of Mehsa's murder.


What is the European Union's Sakharov Prize?


The prize is awarded by the European Parliament to individuals and groups defending freedom of thought and human rights. It is named after the Soviet physicist, political dissident and 1975 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Andrei Sakharov.


The prize money of this award is 50,000 Euros, which will be given at a special ceremony held at the European Parliament on 13 December 2023.
